Late in 2016, we decided to have a ‘change of direction’ as we prepared ourselves for retirement.
Abandoning suburbia, we moved to the outskirts of Ocean Grove, to a large block with a small vegetable garden and an established, but somewhat neglected orchard.

Over time, we extended the existing, raised vegetable beds, as well as the orchard, and we added some cold frames and small greenhouses built from recycled materials.
We also determined that all our produce was to be grown organically.

We soon discovered that the volume of our produce surpassed our expectations, so we shared any excess with family and friends. Soon there was enough to sell through farmers’ markets and local outlets. Home-made seasonal preserves and chutneys then followed.

At the same time, we furthered our knowledge of sustainability through formal study and research at the University of Tasmania.

We have recently completed further garden extensions, adding composting facilities, and more raised garden and wicking beds, which have enabled us to grow a wide range of winter vegetables, including Asian greens.

Our garden recently featured in a segment on "Freshly Picked with Simon Toohey" ( Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/freshlypickedtv/
Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/freshlypickedtv/ @freshlypikcedtv ) Freshly Picked focusses on vibrant, healthy, sustainable food that makes the most of fruit and vegetables.

Pick a sunny spot, plant the seeds and keep watering! We do not use chemicals to control pests or enhance growth which results in richer flavours.

Pumpkins growing on pumpkins, lots of varieties. All great for making hearty soups in the colder months.

When picking, keep the stem intact and attached to the fruit. Store in a cool ventilated place until ready to eat.
